Introduction

Since the peaceful revolution in 1989 there is probably no other place in Europe, that has changed as drastically as Kollwitzplatz in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. Kollwitzplatz is a magnet for a whole nation. What attracts a lot of people, likewise, puts others off: »Too many tourists from the west – I moved to Pankow in 1992.« So, there are those who moved away, those who moved in, those who had to move because of the redevelopment, those who were always here, those who are the losers of 1989, and those from Swabia. The question still remains: whose Kollwitzplatz is it anyway?

Manageable like a small village and yet, due to the TV-tower of Alexanderplatz watching nearby, a metropolis. This district was reconstructed and cleaned up for the 750-year-celebrations of Berlin and has since undergone a complete redevelopment since 1993. Those who are not filmstars or celebrities will soon feel as though they were: amongst so much scenerey the happy end for the individual is not far away. Those who live here have really made it. So many new beginnings and so many promises, all at once and in one place. Simply so much to do.

Everything seems easy, everything is possible. Love and affection »old school« – as a hug or a kiss – rather seldom sights around Kollwitzplatz. Instead the latest baby buggy- and bicycle-buggy creations, vegan icecream, the horse-drawn carriage to the Bio-Supermarket and private life in public space. The children´s playground on Kollwitzplatz is where the TV's »Pregnancy Hill« is broadcasted live – everything works perfectly – without any script.

Karl and Käthe Kollwitz lived here and have left an impact on this neighbourhood. Their life was full of activity and creation. On September 11th, 1919 Käthe Kollwitz was wishing for one thing: »What counts most are healthy children.«
